What is Earth Day and why does it matter?

Every year on April 22, millions of people around the world come together for Earth Day, a global movement focused on protecting our planet and driving meaningful environmental change. Earth Day has been running since 1970, making it one of the largest environmental movements in the world. Each year, it mobilises millions of people across more than 190 countries around a shared goal: to protect the planet we all depend on.

In 2026, the theme continues to centre around collective climate action, with a strong focus on community-led change and everyday impact. You can explore this year’s theme and global focus here: https://www.earthday.org/earth-day-2026/.

As always, we are super passionate about participating. Because Earth Day isn’t just about one day.

It’s about what happens before, during, and long after.

🌏 Earth Day events happening (including April 18)

Many Earth Day events actually kick off in the days leading up to April 22, especially this Saturday, April 18 (we guess so that folks can take part during a non-work day - yay!)

Look out for:

  • Community clean-ups
  • Tree planting days
  • Sustainability workshops
  • Local markets and low-waste events

You can explore what’s happening near you here: https://www.earthday.org/earth-day-2026/#map.

Planning to host something of your own? You can also add your clean-up or community event to the global schedule here: https://www.earthday.org/actions/register-your-earth-day-event/.

Check your local council or community groups to see what’s happening near you.

6 simple ways to take part (from home)

Can't make it to an event? That’s okay. Earth Day is just as powerful at home.

Here are a few ways to get involved:

1. Start composting

Food waste is one of the biggest contributors to landfill. Composting is one of the simplest, most impactful changes you can make.

2. Audit your waste

Take a look at what you’re throwing away most, that’s your starting point.

3. Swap one habit

Plastic wrap → reusable containers

Paper towels → washable cloths

Bin waste → compost

4. Cook more at home

Less packaging, less waste, more control.

5. Use what you already have

Sustainability isn’t about buying more, it’s about using better.

6. Swap out single-use cleaning products

Plastic sponges, disposable wipes, harsh chemical sprays. There are better options for all of them. Cellulose dishcloths, dish brushes, and concentrated cleaning bars are a good place to start.

Progress over perfection

At Seed & Sprout, we believe in small steps over massive changes that sometimes aren't sustainable. You don’t need a zero-waste home overnight. You don’t need to throw everything out and start again. Just start somewhere!

Because when those small changes add up, across homes, families and communities, that’s where real impact happens.
