Free-ish School Holiday Fun: Budget Ideas the Kids Will Actually Love

It happens every school holidays. That moment about day two when the "I'm bored" starts and you realise the budget for spontaneous theme park adventures is, well, not really a budget at all.

Here's the thing though, some of the best holiday memories don't cost much. They just need a little planning, a good snack situation, and the willingness to embrace a bit of mess.

We asked ourselves: what would we actually do with our kids these holidays if we were keeping it low-key and low-spend? Here's what we came up with.

1. The Ultimate Backyard (or Park) Picnic

Pack up everything, blanket, snacks, a good playlist, and declare it A Whole Thing. Kids love the novelty of eating outside, especially when it's set up like a proper spread. Load up the CrunchBox with all their favourites, fill the snack pots with dips, fruit and crackers, and let them graze and run free...

Snack idea: mini hummus cups, cucumber sticks, cheese cubes, grapes, and a little something sweet that you've baked with them (or let them bake themselves!)

2. Nature Scavenger Hunt

Print (or just write out) a simple list, a feather, something yellow, a smooth rock, a seed pod, and head to your nearest park or bushland. It costs nothing, gets everyone off screens, and genuinely keeps kids occupied for longer than you'd expect. Older kids can make the list for younger ones, which buys you at least ten extra minutes of peace.

3. Kids' Kitchen Takeover

Give them a simple recipe and (supervised) free rein. Homemade pizza on pita bread, fruit skewers, decorated biscuits, anything they can mostly do themselves. The mess is real but so is the pride when they eat something they made. Pack leftovers into snack pots for the next day's adventures.

4. Craft Day (With a Sustainability Twist)

Collect cardboard boxes, toilet rolls, old magazines and textas. Set up a making station and let them build, cut, glue and create. You can theme it, a city, a rainforest, a rocket ship, or just let chaos reign. Sneaky bonus: great conversation starter about reusing materials instead of buying new.

5. Beach or River Day (Packed Properly)

If you're near the coast or a river, this one's basically free. The trick is packing well so you're not spending the whole day buying snacks and drinks. Fill up insulated drink bottles before you leave, load the lunchbox, grab the reusable bags, and suddenly a simple beach day feels like a proper escape.

6. Backyard Campout

You don't need to go anywhere. Drag the tent (or just some blankets) outside, make a thermos of hot chocolate, do some stargazing. Kids absolutely love the novelty of sleeping "outside" even if it's two metres from the back door. Add a torch, a spooky story and you've nailed it.

7. Outdoor Cinema

Instead of heading out, bring the cinema home! See if you can borrow a projector off someone, hang up an old white sheet, lay out blankets and bean bags, and prep snacks in advance, popcorn, chopped fruit, or homemade treats. Can't head outside for some reason? Can be just as fun and cosy inside...

A note on snacks (because it matters more than you think)

Hungry kids are miserable kids. But snacking on the go doesn't have to mean a pile of wrappers and a guilt spiral. A few leakproof pots, a good lunchbox, and a bit of prep the night before makes the whole holiday smoother, and a lot less expensive than buying food out every day.
