Is Silicone a Safer Alternative to Plastic?

Exploring the Health and Environmental Benefits

In today's world, making eco-conscious choices is more critical than ever. In a single year, the average Aussie discards 130 kilograms of plastic. At Seed & Sprout, we're on a mission to reduce plastic waste and explore sustainable alternatives that make a true difference.

The Health Impact of Plastic

Plastics have become an integral part of our daily lives, however, it is crucial to consider how plastics impact our health. Multiple studies now indicate that plastic pollution poses risks to our well-being as well as the health of our environment.

Microplastics: These tiny pieces of plastic, less than five millimeters long, have now been found inside the human body and the full impacts are yet to be realised. Tiny plastic particles can originate from our clothes, our plastic food containers and even our personal care products.

Chemicals: Plastics are made using toxic chemicals that can leach into our food. There is mounting evidence that plastic additives can be carcinogenic (cancer-causing), hormone disruptors, and toxic to human health.

The more informed we are, the better decisions we can make for ourselves and our families. Reducing our reliance on plastics also reduces our exposure to microplastics and the harsh chemicals used to make them.

Silicone Food Containers: A Step Towards Sustainability?

Reducing plastic waste isn't limited to glass.

The silicone we choose to use is a superior choice over plastic for several reasons. Firstly, it is more durable, stain and odour resistant and less likely to break, which means fewer replacements, reducing overall waste.

Secondly, our silicone is heat-resistant up to 230c and can withstand high temperatures without leaching harmful chemicals into your food or the environment. Silicone is also non-toxic, BPA-free, and doesn't contain harmful chemicals commonly found in plastics.

Seed & Sprout's Silicone Recycling Program

With just 12.4% of all waste in Australia being recycled, we decided to do things differently. You can send any of your damaged silicone products back to us as part of our Silicone Take-Back Program in partnership with TerraCycle.
