Is Silicone a Safer Alternative to Plastic?

Exploring the Health and Environmental Benefits

In today's world, making eco-conscious choices is more critical than ever. In a single year, the average Aussie discards 130 kilograms of plastic. At Seed & Sprout, we're on a mission to reduce plastic waste and explore sustainable alternatives that make a true difference.

The Health Impact of Plastic

Plastics have become an integral part of our daily lives, however, it is crucial to consider how plastics impact our health. Multiple studies now indicate that plastic pollution poses risks to our well-being as well as the health of our environment.

Microplastics: These tiny pieces of plastic, less than five millimeters long, have now been found inside the human body and the full impacts are yet to be realised. Tiny plastic particles can originate from our clothes, our plastic food containers and even our personal care products.

Chemicals: Plastics are made using toxic chemicals that can leach into our food. There is mounting evidence that plastic additives can be carcinogenic (cancer-causing), hormone disruptors, and toxic to human health.

The more informed we are, the better decisions we can make for ourselves and our families. Reducing our reliance on plastics also reduces our exposure to microplastics and the harsh chemicals used to make them.

Silicone Food Containers: A Step Towards Sustainability?

Reducing plastic waste isn't limited to glass.

The silicone we choose to use is a superior choice over plastic for several reasons. Firstly, it is more durable, stain and odour resistant and less likely to break, which means fewer replacements, reducing overall waste.

Secondly, our silicone is heat-resistant up to 230c and can withstand high temperatures without leaching harmful chemicals into your food or the environment. Silicone is also non-toxic, BPA-free, and doesn't contain harmful chemicals commonly found in plastics.

Seed & Sprout's Silicone Recycling Program

With just 12.4% of all waste in Australia being recycled, we decided to do things differently. You can send any of your damaged silicone products back to us as part of our Silicone Take-Back Program in partnership with TerraCycle.

Silicone Food Containers

How long does silicone last? Silicone is incredibly durable and can last for many years with proper care. We only use long-lasting premium grade silicone in our products.

Can you put silicone cake moulds in the oven? Yes, you can use silicone to bake cakes, muffins and cupcakes. Our silicone moulds are oven-safe and can withstand  temperatures up to 230c.

Can silicone go in the air fryer? All of our silicone products are air fryer safe but we recommend checking your specific silicone product's heat resistance.

Can silicone go in the microwave? Our silicone products are microwave safe and a great option to reheat leftovers.

How to clean silicone? Our premium grade silicone is easy to clean with soap and water but it is also dishwasher safe. Our Pot Scrubber and Dish Bar make the best cleaning combo for silicone!

What other options do I have?

If you're not keen on silicone then we'd recommend switching to glass. Glass is inherently free of harmful chemicals like BPA and phthalates that are found in some plastic products. It's a stable material that also has all the benefits that silicone has.

Our Wategos Glass Pantry Jar Range and Our Glass Eco Stow sets are all made from borosilicate glass which is oven, microwave and air fryer safe. Imagine a pantry that's not just organised but also eco-friendly.

With their timeless design and quality, our products are built to last and each and every one of them stands as a testament to our commitment to sustainability.
